Masked Email vs a Disposable Inbox

Masked email services — Firefox Relay, addy.io, DuckDuckGo Email Protection — generate an address that forwards into a mailbox you already own, so it is durable and you can reply through it. A disposable inbox is a standalone mailbox with no account behind it, read in the browser and discarded. Choose masking when the account should outlive the signup, and a disposable inbox when it should not.

Short answer: Masking services put a disposable-looking address in front of a mailbox you keep. A disposable inbox has no mailbox behind it at all. Both stop a site from learning your real address; only one of them is still working in six months, and only one of them leaves nothing to clean up.

What is a masked email service?

An address generator plus a forwarder. You create an address, give it to a site, and mail sent to it is relayed into your existing inbox. Because the mail ultimately arrives in a mailbox you control, you can usually reply through the mask, and you can switch a noisy address off without changing anything else.

The well-known options differ in emphasis rather than in shape. Firefox Relay ties masks to a Mozilla account. addy.io is open source and can be self-hosted, which appeals if you would rather not add another party to your mail path. How is that different from a disposable inbox?

One consequence is easy to miss: a mask is only as private as the account holding it. Everything you create is listed in one place, under one login, which is exactly what makes it manageable — and exactly why it is not anonymity.

When is masking the right tool?

When the relationship continues. A shop you buy from, a subscription that bills you, a service that will send a password reset a year from now — these need an address that still routes to you, and masking gives you that without handing over the real one. It is also the better answer when you need to reply, since a disposable inbox cannot.

Masking also wins for the slow-burn privacy case: giving every service its own address means a leaked address identifies the leaker, and switching it off costs nothing.

When is a disposable inbox the right tool?

When the relationship ends at the confirmation click. Verification codes, gated downloads, trials you are sizing up, forums you will post in once, QA runs against your own signup flow. In all of these, forwarding is pure overhead: you would be routing mail into a mailbox you keep, for an account you do not.

It is also the honest choice when you do not want an account anywhere at all. Masking requires signing up with the masking provider — a smaller exposure than the one you are avoiding, but not zero. A browser inbox asks for nothing, which is the point.

Can you use both?

Yes, and the split is easy to hold because the question at each form is the same one: will I need to hear from these people again? Yes routes to a mask in front of your real mailbox. No routes to a disposable inbox, which you can open several of in parallel to keep unrelated signups apart.

What neither approach does

Neither is encryption and neither is anonymity. Email is plain text in transit and at rest on both ends, so the recipient's provider sees the message either way. The sender still learns your IP address, the time you opened the message, and everything the form asked for. What both tools do is much narrower and still worth having: they keep your durable address out of a database that will eventually be breached, sold, or both.

Neither belongs on anything recovery-critical either. A disposable inbox in particular is receive-only, bound to the browser that created it, and retained only for a limited window under the data retention policy.
